Description: A siliceous sponge resembling a pine cone; its surface is rough and abrasive. The osculum is centrally positioned and surrounded by spicules.
Reproduction: It is hermaphroditic and also reproduces by fragmentation. Habitat: At depths of between 1 and 10 meters, beneath rocks. Distribution: Tropical regions and the Mediterranean.
Color: White to light gray. Size: Up to 1–1.5 cm. Caution: None. Lighting: Low or dim.
Natural predators: Cadlina laevis, a nudibranch from the family Chromodorididae.
Notes: It is a filter-feeding animal that filters water through its body wall and expels it through the osculum. It indicates a healthy system.
